From a patient to a student doctor

My name is Tambeayuk Agnes Agborsangayah, a 22-year-old Cameroonian citizen and a third-year medical student at the Faculty of Health Sciences, the University of Buea studying General Medicine.             I heard of Hadassah Medical Centre in the year 2016, following a motorbike accident I had in 2015 and my mum and I were directed to come to Hadassah, The accident left me with a terrible hypertrophic scar which continually made me uncomfortable because it was always so itchy, I couldn't stand on my feet for long as the itches increased and it was at a very noticeable part of my body: my leg and it was large which made people always ask me about what happened.

Coming to Hadassah, plastic surgery was done on my leg by use of a skin expander, and that is how I left the hospital in 2017 with all smiles.

All these, together with some other experiences, made me love and admire the medical field. After my advanced level, I wrote the medical entrance exams three times and finally gained entry upon writing the third time.

While looking for a place to do an internship and also because I wanted to go somewhere far from the Southwest region, it then dawned on me that I could go to Hadassah Medical Centre. I was able to reach out to Dr Oben, and he gladly welcomed the idea and told me to come when I want, and that the hospital was ready to receive me.

My experience at Hadassah medical centre was one, I was glad I didn’t miss it. When I arrived, there was a team getting ready to travel to the North for a Cleft mission which the doctor had told me about before, so I joined the team. Initially, I was a little anxious. I had certain goals and objectives. I wanted to be able to link my theory in school to what was done at the hospital, I wanted to get more familiar with the hospital setting and how things are being done, I wanted to assist in at least one surgery and be able to ask questions where I had doubts, I wanted to network and get to meet new people, and I also wanted to learn the French language.

Our journey to the North was a wonderful one. I was opportune to learn from the anaesthetics a little about what they do, I was opportune to meet, work and learn from amazing people, from the specialists who were present, the anaesthetics, the nurses and even the media department and other medical student like me. I saw and learnt what it means to be humble, what it means to cater for life, and what one can do in a little way to give value to the lives of others.

When we came back from the North where we had spent approximately one week there, I continued with my internship at the hospital there at Simbock, Yaoundé. I was so amazed to hear that there were morning devotions. Amongst the 3 different hospitals where I have done an internship, this is the very first I have seen that does morning devotions and it is compulsory for all. I also do appreciate this fact.

On my first day of work, Dr Oben handed me to the head of the medical doctors. I would say, they held my hands throughout my stay there. I would follow them for rounds, I asked questions, they asked me questions, I was given assignments and was always corrected. I did not feel left out even when I gave a wrong answer because they took time to explain to me what ought to be. During my free time, I would go and check on some patients’ files. What  I couldn’t understand because of the language, I would type all of it on google and get the translation and then jot it down in my notebook. Google translate became my best friend. Most often when I hear some words, I would note them and ask the doctors for better spelling and then go home and find out the meaning. My interactions with the doctors made it easy for me to be to link my theory in school and what I saw in the field.

I would also spend some mornings in the dressing room, to see how wound dressing is being done, I   also took part in the nursing presentations so that I could also learn some things from them too. Sometimes, I also had to explain some concepts to them during the presentations. I usually loved these days. Not leaving out the general presentations which take place every Friday, I did learn from them too.

Some of the doctors were not English-speaking, but the efforts they put in to explain things and work with me are commendable. I do appreciate them.

Most often I was not happy with myself when I was asked a question and I didn’t have the right response, but I loved it because it pushed me to study harder each time.

I had the opportunity to enter the theatre and on the very first day, Dr Oben allowed me to assist in a rhinoplasty, telling me that he doesn’t want what happened to him when he was younger to happen to the upcoming young medical doctors. I was also very excited to assist in trauma surgery given that that is the speciality I have been thinking of getting into.

I saw different cases I have never seen or heard of, I saw cases I have only read from books and also saw how they were all being managed.

In a nutshell, I would love to summarize my experience by saying, ‘Hadassah is a place I would love to come back to again and again”

My motivation to do medicine comes from the desire to serve people in the health sector and help ease their pain. I would love to take an active part in trying to better the health of others. Given that my health was not really the best at a certain age and that of some family members was not the best either, I can say I know what it means to be in pain and the limitations ill health can place on one’s daily life, so it is with this that I am constantly driven to serve in the health sector.

I am interested in clinical research, and this has driven me to enrol in Academies that help tutor and mentor students in research I am currently a POHER 2023 scholar. Of recent, I began gaining interest in trauma surgery (Orthopedics). I am convinced that with subsequent exposure and more research being done, I will gain clarity if this is the speciality I want.

Yours Sincerely,

Tambeayuk Agnes
