BCG Vaccine

What is BCG? Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) disease.  It is named after its inventors Albert Calmette and Camille Guérin. The BCG vaccine was first used medically in 1921. It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines.

What is Tuberculosis? : Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs. The bacteria that cause tuberculosis are spread from person to person through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes. Signs and symptoms of active TB include: Coughing for three or more weeks, Coughing up blood or mucus, Chest pain, or pain with breathing or coughing, Unintentional weight loss, Fatigue, Fever, Night sweats, Chills, Loss of appetite

When and How is the BCG Vaccine administered? BCG Vaccine is the 1st vaccine given to a newborn baby. The vaccine helps the baby develop protection (immunity) against the disease. The baby will get the BCG vaccination in the upper part of the left arm. It is important to note that the BCG vaccine should only be given once in a lifetime.

 

At Hadassah Medical Center Simbock Yaounde, BCG Vaccines are administered every 1st Monday of the month.
